Super Over win for Sri Lanka, West Indies ride on Charles and Gayle power display
A T20 World Cup super over appeared as Sri Lanka prevailed in the first super 8 match of the World Twenty20. Chasing a target of 174 set by New Zealand, hosts Sri Lanka drew level with the score at the end of the scheduled 20 overs. The super 8 match then progressed to the super over to decide the outcome of the match.
Sri Lanka started the super over with captain, Mahela Jayawerdene and Thisara Perera taking the crease. Tim Southee was handed the ball by his captain to see New Zealand through in the first super over of World T20 2012, but he gave away two wides in the super over. The excitement was at a high when Dilshan came into bat for the super over after scoring 76 in the Sri Lankan innings.
The World Twenty20 hosts set New Zealand a target of 14 runs for the super over with Brendon McCullum and Guptill taking strike for the Black Caps. It was evident that Malinga was going to bowl the super over for Sri Lanka as he remains to be the main stay for Sri Lankan pace attack. Malinga restricted the Kiwis to 7 runs as Sri Lanka celebrated their win in their first super 8 encounter of the T20 World Cup.
In another match of the super 8 stage, England saw the old ghost of spin haunting them as they lost to West Indies despite Eoin Morgan’s assault on the Carribean attack. Chris Gayle continued his golden run with the bat as he blazed his way to a half-century, but the highlight of the West Indian innings was Charles, scoring 84 in 56 balls.
England suffered their second defeat of the World Twenty20 after their bizarre loss to India when they bundled out at 80 runs. With two more matches in the super 8 stages left for the British side, they need to come up with ideas to bolster their batting against spin.
