World Twenty20 2012 Final: West Indies wins as Sri lanka says ‘so near yet so far’
T20 World Cup 2012 came to a befitting end as West Indies conquered Sri Lanka in the final which left the Caribbeans in a joyous mood showing their Gangnam moves to the celebrating audience. The calypso crooners defeated Sri Lanka and ended their 33-year drought of a world title by winning the World Twenty20.
West Indies took to the finals of the T20 World Cup after defeating Australia in the semi-finals, with Chris Gayle lighting the stadium with his power hitting in the semi-finals. Sri Lanka started their finals quest after defeating Pakistan in the semi-finals of the world cup. Sri Lanka looked in commanding form in the initial stages of the T20 finals with the Caribbean openers departing early.
Marlon Samuels, the man-of-the-match revived the batting of West Indies and carried the score to 137. Call it fate or co-incidence, Sri Lanka defended the total of 139 against Pakistan in the first semi-final of the T20 World Cup 2012, while it failed to chase 137 in the World Twenty 2012 final.
Darren Sammy was over the moon as he said, “We will definitely cherish this moment. I will for sure. We’re going to relive it every day of our lives. This is the best moment for me in any cricket. The trophy is for the Caribbean people. West Indies fans all over the world have been craving success. I know they’re partying from Jamaica down to Guyana. And we know how to party. I think they’ll need a lot of bartenders.”
Sri Lanka, on the other hand still remain title less since their 1996 World Cup triumph. The hosts would be heart broken after their loss in the finals of the T20 World Cup 2012 as they had not lost a single match since the super 8 stage of the world cup. Sri Lanka has now become the team to feature in most finals without winning the final.
After the gold chains and the calypso vigour settle down, the audience who have seen the triumph will be proud to say, “I have seen West Indies win a World Cup.”
