Arsenal FC latest transfer news and rumours, Aug 24
What a turbulent past month it’s been for Arsenal, resigning defeat in the Robin Van Persie saga to bitter opponents Manchester United, then Alex Song to Barcelona, now Nuri Sahin, who looked a dead cert to fill the midfield void has done another u-turn and is pipped to join Liverpool.
Arsene Wenger had been confident that the Sahin deal was in the bag, making him the forth big signing of the summer after Giroud, Podolski and Cazorla, however, the longer the situation procrastinated, the less likely it seemed the Arsenal boss would capture the Turkish international’s signature.
Sahin was due to come to Arsenal on a season-loan deal, with the backing of every tabloid in circulation, a deal should have been wrapped up last week, sources claimed.
Liverpool have always been in the running for Sahin too, an given that Real Madrid boss Jose Mourinho has said all along that he doesn’t care where Sahin ends up, it was always going to be a toss-up as to which offer suited the player best.
It is understood that the Gunners had agreed to pay up £2m for a loan fee, plus pay a large majority of Sahin’s wages, only for Liverpool to steam in at the eleventh hour and propose a £5 million fee and to cover all salary and relocation costs.
The Reds are now expecting Sahin on Merseyside in the next 24 hours, commented boss Brendan Rodgers: ‘Hopefully in the next 24 hours we will get some confirmation on that. It’s quite far along’.
