Arsenal FC Latest Transfer News & Rumours: Gunners want Pepe Reina
A trio of Arsenal transfer news and rumours to shower football fans this morning, kicking off with the Metro’s insinuations that Pepe Reina is back in contention for talks with Arsene Wenger, in light of goalkeeper unrest at both the Emirates and Anfield.
Last season Wenger was said to have gone in heavy for the Spainish stopper with a £20m bid, quite unlike the Arsenal boos it may seem but the rumour was qualified by Reina himself.
”Arsenal had made their determination to sign me clear by offering £20m, a phenomenal amount for a goalkeeper. Part of me felt that I was well within my rights to consider my future even if I did so with a heavy heart.
”When Liverpool received the bid, they rejected it…I was told that my continued presence was crucial to the sale of the club. I was simply a bargaining chip in the sales process.”
It’s no secret that Arsenal’s porous defensive line this season is largely due to goalkeeping errors, which may stimulate Wenger to move for 30-year-old Reina as soon as January.
Up next in the transfer shop window is highly regarded Derby starlet Will Hughes, which both Wenger and Sir Alex Ferguson see as the latest must-have buy, he’ll cost a modest £10m.
Derby manager Nigel Clough is hoping to keep hold of Hughes, 17, who recently made his debut for England’s Under-21s against Northern Ireland.
“If anybody wants him, they know it will be serious money, ”Clough stated, “Nothing has changed. If an offer comes in for Will or any player, it will be judged on its merits. If we think it is good business and we can do something with it, then we will do it.
Clough continued, “When a 17-year-old looks to have the ability Will has, then it is bound to attract attention. It is inevitable. We don’t mind that at all. It shows he is doing something right and it is great for our Academy.
And finally, a player that wont be shaking hands with Arsenal chiefs any time soon is former target Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa of Montpillier, who only recently extended his current contract.
Arsenal were eyeing the 23-year-old France international however following weeks of talks, Yanga-Mbiwa has signed a contract that takes him until 2015.
