John Terry a permanent fixture in today’s football headlines
Chelsea boss Roberto Di Matteo hailed his players last night after an emphatic 4-0 thumping of Danish champions Nordsjaelland, giving special praise to Spanish magician Juan Mata and goalkeeper Petr Cech for standout performances.
The Blues brushed aside the Champions League newcomers in their first win of the tournament in group E with a David Luiz free-kick, a Ramires strike and a brace from man of the match Juan Mata.
John Terry was absent from the game, the void filled by Gary Cahill. The former England captain has been in the spotlight again this week regarding a public misunderstanding over his four-match ban.
There has been some confusion over the difference in bans of Terry and Liverpool striker Suarez, who was also found guilty of racial abuse on the pitch last season but was penalised for much longer.
Experts have attempted to clear up the situation claiming Suarez suffered a heftier sentence because he was found guilty of using racially abusive language repeatedly, whereas with Terry it was an isolated incident, a one-off.
Despite the clarification it bears no reflection on the current campaign to kick out racial abuse in football, contradicting the very essence of what the FA is trying to achieve, and hence the debate will be sure to continue.
Time for some ex-Chelsea transfer news, old-timer Eidur Gudjohnsen is set to sign for Belgian club Cercle Brugge today, as reported by TalkSport.
The 34-year-old has been a without a permanent club agent since seeing out his contract with Greek side AEK Athens earlier this summer, Seattle Sounders were also rumoured to be interested in the front man.
