Chelsea FC – Latest news, gossip and transfer rumours roundup
All eyes are on the left full-back spot at Stamford Bridge today, predominantly for reasons first-team regular Ashley Cole would be more than happy to forget, following his recent outburst on Twitter to thousands of followers.
Today’s dose of media disapproval is led by the Daily Star, which reiterates the story for the sake of filling column inches then adds in Cole’s financial punishments, £300,000 from the FA and £240,000 by Chelsea respectively, for good measure.
The taxing was swiftly enforced after the England international referred to the FA as “a bunch of t***s” on Twitter, and now he is to face further FA charges for improper conduct and bringing the game into disrepute, to the tune of £60,000.
The Telegraph today reveals that Cole has tried to make amends with FA chairman David Bernstein by apologising for his actions, once on Friday after the incident and again and last night, Bernstein commented: ”He apologised immediately on Friday and he came to see me last night and apologised to me personally”.
“He showed real contrition. He said he was really sorry. He is free to play for England over the coming matches. It is up to the manager to decide whether he plays or not.”
If Ashley Cole has truly burned his bridges with the Chelsea and England setups, pressure will be placed on apprentice Ryan Bertrand to fill in until permenant measures are taken.
Bertrand has been called up to the England squad for World Cup qualifiers against San Marino and Poland, albeit due to the absence of teammate Cole’s antics and injury to Arsenal’s Gibbs.
