Chelsea FC Latest Transfer News & Rumours: Romelu Lukaku
Not the greatest of weekends for fans who travelled to the game on the weekend, but boss Roberto Di Matteo is reluctant to accept that his 3-2 loss to rivals Manchester United will throw a spanner in the works for Chelsea’s Premier League campaign.
There is one hitch in the Italian manager’s plans that attracted more attention that being his lack of firepower up front, now exacerbated by the sending off of Fernando Torres which will force Di Matteo to reach out to West Brom for help in this department.
The Chelsea gaffer has confirmed that the club has the option of recalling Romelu Lukaku from his loan spell at West Bromwich Albion if the goals from his forward men dry up completely.
In yesterday’s game Di Matteo was about to introduce second choice striker Daniel Sturridge in replace of the baron Torres moments before he was awarded his second bookable offense and joining defender Ivanovic on red card duty.
For these reasons and more Di Matteo is contemplating bringing Lukaku back to Stamford Bridge in January when the transfer window opens.
“There’s an option in January for us,” Di Matteo confirmed, “It’s a one-year loan but we have a clause. He’s had a good impact but we look forward to him starting a run of games and seeing him progress.”
Another youngster gaining admirers is Genoa full back Mario Sampirisi, 19, who dazzled against AC Milan on Saturday.
Di Matteo is said to facny his chances of landing the young defensive star but will face stiff competition from sir Alex Ferguson, who sent scouts to the weekend’s game in Italy.
Meanwhile at the Bridge, stand-in centre half Gary Cahill has been recalled to the starting line-up in captain John Terry’s absence for a handful of games been has expressed his frustration at taking so long to earn a first-team spot.
In yesterday’s post-match interview Cahill said: “It has been frustrating for me at times this season, I’m not going to lie – like on Tuesday night in the Champions League. I think you can accept it if you are playing the same amount of games as everybody else. That’s the only way you can come to terms with it.”
