Chelsea send Manchester United packing with extra-time victory
Chelsea vs Manchester United (MU) result turned out to be the perfect antidote for the Premier League title holders after their last match with the Old Trafford side was marred by racial controversies. Man U fans would have loved to witness their side thwart the Chelsea attack the second time and provide the icing on the cake after their Premier League match win.
Chelsea’s Capital One match victory over Man U should have served the bruised egos of the Blues as the last match was not a happy outing for them. Chelsea manager, Di Matteo was furious at the referee, Mark Clattenberg for sending Spanish striker, Torres off the field for diving and verbally assaulting the Stamford Bridge side.
Commenting on Chelsea’s win, Di Matteo said, “We wanted to show that Sunday’s game was really heavily influenced by the officials. We deservedly won the game.” The Capital One game between Chelsea and Man U featured three penalties, which were duly converted by players. The match proved to be night where football prevailed, though some Chelsea fans might argue about the waiving of Juan Mata’s penalty claim.
Man U fielded a young defence as Sir Alex later acknowledged the fact that Man Utd was too young to cope with the Chelsea attack. He said, “We have done fantastically well and I think we have thrown the game away really. We didn’t deserve it but in extra-time I think they found it too much in terms of the young players.”
With this win, Chelsea books a berth for the quarter-final match against Leeds in another Capital One Cup encounter.
