Liverpool FC Latest Transfer News & Rumours: Lewis Holtby
Tonight’s encounter with Swansea will prove to be Brendan Rogers’ make or break point having left Wales for the Anfield club to pursue his European dream but anything less than a win will throw up questions as to whether the Liverpool boss has made the right move.
Capital One Cup aside, there’s transfer rumours to be cross-examined in today’s news feeds, let’s begin with that lead on Germany international midfielder Lewis Holtby.
Holtby, 22, currently turning heads at Schalke, has an English father and grew up supporting Everton, which puts him off to a poor start, but on the brighter side he is out of contract in the summer and is top of Rodgers wish list.
The midfielder will be free to sign a pre-contract deal from January with the Premier League his chosen destinations, according to Holtby’s agent Markus Noack.
‘Lewis is very good at Schalke but above all there is an English club which has made a very interesting proposal,’ Noack was quoted as saying on calciomercato.com.
‘We are talking with Schalke about a possible extension for another three years,’ Noack added.
Noack also confirmed that Liverpool have moved ahead of Inter Milan in the pecking order to nab Holtby: “Inter Milan? We have not received any proposals from Italy and he would prefer [to play in] the Premier League and La Liga.”
A ghost from Anfield past popped up in the Liverpool news stream this week, ex-manager Gerard Houllier had some rather complimentary advice for Brendan Rodgers on the official Liverpool FC website.
Houllier remarked that Rodgers is building a ‘very good future’ for Liverpool Football Club by giving teenagers such as Raheem Sterling first-team opportunities.
“He plays the right way and I’m pleased he’s given a chance to some of the young players. Some are very good…. Suso, Andre Wisdom and Joe Allen are all good players and it’s very good for the future of the club.”
