Manchester United latest transfer rumours & team news, Feb 4
Manchester United transfer news remains a visceral force in this morning’s football pages thanks to speculation linking Stoke’s Asmir Begovic with the Old Trafford unit as David de Gea’s replacement, so the papers say.
The bottom line, according to Stoke manager Tony Pulis, is that Manchester United or any other Premier League outfit contemplating bidding for their in-form stopper will have to shell out £15m and not a penny less.
This transfer story has been evolving at a gradual pace for several months now, ever since Bergovic, now with nine clean sheets to his name this season, began to prove that he is up there with the Premiership’s finest goalkeepers with dazzling performances between the sticks.
It was only a matter of time before the big clubs came knocking, which is why many insiders suppose Pulis went in for Birmingham keeper Jack Butland who signed a four-and-a-half-year contract with Stoke in the last week of January.
The agreed fee of Butland’s transfer is said to amount to £3.5m; however, the England international has been loaned back out to the Championship side until the end of the season.
Logic dictates that two great goalkeepers can’t compete for the same spot (think Joe Hart and Shay Given) so when Butland returns to his new club Stoke first choice goalkeeper Begovic is likely to be moved on in exchange for a handsome sum.
David De Gea, currently fumbling his way through another season at Manchester United, will be the man who makes way for the transfer of Bergovic, rumours point to his failure to settle in England as the main reason for a dip in form and the excuse Sir Alex needs to sever ties.
If a deal has been made already it is not to the knowledge of the public, but it won’t come as a surprise to see this transfer rumour hit the news at the end of the Premier League 2012/13 season.
