Manchester United Latest News & Transfer Rumours: Rio Ferdinand
Column inches given over to transfer rumours are shrinking by the day but that hasn’t stopped Sports Bulletin from mining for the latest on goings at Manchester United, we here Rio might be on his way out, but to which club..?
The BBC, of Jimmy Saville fame, has it in writing (albeit a transfer gossip column) that West Ham are preparing an ambitious bid for former home-grown defender and public figure Rio Ferdinand, fuelled by the dreams of big Sam Allardyce.
Ferdinand has yet to sign a contract extension with Manchester United, which could see Fergie set him free for nothing when the summer window opens.
The ex-England player, now 34, began his career at Upton Park before making an £18million move to Leeds back in 2000 making him Britain’s most expensive defender of all time.
Following Rio out the Old Trafford fire exit door could be fellow countryman Wayne Rooney, this transfer rumour is being peddled by The Sun this morning, which claims his likely destination is Russia.
As reported in its transfer gossip section wealthy Russian club Anzhi Makhachkala are planning a big-money move for the 27-year-old striker to accompany former Barcelona money-grabber Samuel Eto’o in a fantasy forward line.
Anzhi team director Roberto Carlos is excited at the prospect of bringing in one of the Premier League’s biggest commodities, he commented in a recent interview:
“Why not? He’s one of the best players in the world and any team would be happy to have him in their squad.”
Jumping off the transfer wagon but remaining on the topic of money, the Daily Mirror is pushing Manchester United’s latest sponsorship triumph, a deal has been penned with General Motors worth £559m, just pipping Sameul Eto’o’s annual wage packet.
General Motors are paying a world record sum to replace AON as shirt sponsors from 2014, this deal means the Glazer family will be buying out former sponsors DHL to conclude the deal.
