Manchester United latest transfer rumours, team news roundup part 2
Some may argue that the defensive frailties exposed within the Manchester United setup must be dealt with by introducing new blood into the back line, however a recent transfer story reveals this route to success may be on the back burner until a plan B is agreed.
Reported in today’s Manchester United transfer gossip column, Sir Alex Ferguson will lose out to long-term target Ryan Shawcross of Stoke who has agreed to stay at his club by singing a long-term contract extension.
The centre half, now proudly wearing the Stoke armband, had a short run-out for the England side in their friendly against Sweden and is regarded as one of the most talented defensive commodities in Premier League football.
It is no secret that Manchester United have been enquiring over the availability of Shawcross due to the uncertainty of the future of first-choice partnership Ferdinand and Vidic, now Sir Alex will have to commit to a serious bid or give up the ghost.
“I am very happy here and very settled here,” Shawcross told reporters. “I have loved my five years here so far and I want that to continue. We have progressed incredibly from when I first came.
“The people here have looked after me really well, the fans have been brilliant with me and I want to be a part of the future.”
Stoke boss Tony Pulis will do everything in his powers to hold onto the influential skipper who has shown true character as one of the club’s most reliable players since arriving in 2008 after an initial loan spell.
